We are offering this wonderful antique covered porcelain dish. This piece looks like a soup tureen in miniature. We have not been able to determine if this is a covered sauce boat or a salesman's sample or part of a larger child or doll set.
The dish is white porcelain with hand painted flowers and leaves in the colors of pink and dark gray, with touches of yellow and brown and trimmed in gold. The shape is rectangular with handles on two sides of the base and a center handle on the lid. The base is footed and the lid has an inner lip. The lid also has an arched space on one of the short sides to allow a ladle or spoon to rest.
The underside of the base is marked: "ROYAL IRONSTONE CHINA" above the ornate makers mark. The mark is of a crown with a lion on the left and a unicorn on the right. Below the mark reads: "JOHNSON BROS LATE PANKHURST & Co. ENGLAND". According to our research, this is a very early mark, circa 1883. We have not been able to identify the specific name of the pattern.
The dish measures approximately 7-3/4"L x 4-5/8"W x 4-3/4"H with the cover in place. It is in very good condition.
