This is a beautiful vintage bronze card tray. It is signed on the underside by the manufacturer: "Y & T MFG CO" "STAMFORD CONN". There is also an impressed company logo in the very center on the back. (Please see photographs.)
Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company was established in 1868 by Linus Yale and Henry Towne in Stamford, Connecticut. Linus Yale was the inventor of the tumbler lock. He died in New York on December 24, 1868, never knowing that his company would become the leading manufacturer of locks in the world. Henry Towne expanded the company from locks to materials handling in 1875. Yale & Towne Manufacturing was the leading employer in the Stamford, Connecticut area.
The tray is quite heavy and features a wonderful mythological design with excellent detail. There are four different figures on the tray. One appears to be Neptune, God of the Sea. There is another male image and two female images.
This piece measures approximately 7 1/4" in diameter and weighs over 14 oz. It is in very good condition. We acquired this item approximately 16 years ago and have never polished it so the patina is as found.
