This is a very desirable piece of vintage Hobe. It is a signed sterling silver brooch or pin with a gold wash (vermeil). It was made in the shape of a lovely pansy flower. Two of the petals are solid sterling and the other three petals are sterling filigree. In the center of the flower there is a single faceted blue crystal or glass or semi-precious stone which is bezel set. Surrounding the stone are layered petals creating a flower within a flower effect.
Hobe was founded by William Hobé in New York in the 1930's. William Hobe immigrated to the U.S. from France where his family made fine jewelry for generations. Hobe jewelry was used in showgirl costumes in the Ziegfeld Follies as well as in many Hollywood movies. Hobe produced high quality jewelry for upscale stores, often using semi-precious stones.
The brooch measures approximately 1-1/4" in diameter. It has a rollover safety clasp which is secure. In a cartouche on the back it reads: "Hobe, STERLING, DESIGN PAT'D". We have not cleaned or polished this piece. It is in very good condition.
