This is a fantastic cannetille brooch or pin. It features sterling silver filigree and open work, all hand done by an expert artisan. The brooch has offset concentric and rising circles with different designs and techniques applied at each level. In the center most and smallest open circle sits a beautiful pear shaped coral stone in a curlicue bezel.
Jewelry with cannetille was very popular in the 1820's and 1830's. Motifs included tendrils, scrolls, coils, beehives and spider-like rosette ornaments. Jewelry featuring cannetille was often embellished with granulation and thinly stamped metals.
The brooch or pin is fitted with a secure trombone clasp and there is a silver pendant tab as well so that the item can also be worn on a chain as a pendant.
There are some unreadable hallmarks on the pin stem. We have tried to identify them so we could ascertain more about the origin and age of this piece, but we have not been able to. The detail and high quality of workmanship in this piece is outstanding.
The brooch measures approximately 1-1/2" in diameter and is in very good to excellent condition. We have not cleaned or polished this piece.
