RESERVED for ANNA - Union Case Folding Picture Frame with Ambrotype Photograph
We are offering a wonderful antique Union Case with identified photograph. These cases were commonly used for ambrotype photos from the mid 1850's to the mid 1870's. The left-hand side of this case is made from deep green velvet. The metal around the photo is pinchbeck, a soft gold-colored alloy. Union cases were made from a compound of shellac and sawdust which could be moulded into elaborate patterns.
The photograph or ambrotype in this case is of a child who is standing. The photo has been labeled "My Father Edwin Dorland Comer". Although he is a boy, it was not uncommon for the era to clothe male children in dresses. His expression is serious.
This case measures approximately 3-5/8"H x 3-1/2"W x 5/8"D. It is in very good condition. The hinge is intact as are the glass over the photo, and double latches. We see only a few scuffs on the case. Nothing serious but mentioned for accuracy. Please view all photographs and let us know if you have questions.
Please check our listings for another Union case that came from the same family.
