This is one of the larger and most desirable pieces designed by Trifari's master jeweler, Alfred Philippe. This adorable tree frog was registered under patent number 125848 on May 6, 1941. The clip is featured on page 102 of Brunialti's "American Costume Jewelry" Volume 2 and has a five-star rating for rarity. The clip depicts a large tree frog with enameled legs while the sides and feet are encrusted with shimmering clear rhinestones. The main portion of the body is made of a tremendous, faceted citrine-colored crystal. The eyes bulge with green cabochons and the toes are daintily adorned with red cabochons. This fabulous reptile looks real enough to hop away any moment.
The clip measures 2-1/2 inches in height and 2-3/4 inches in width. It is in excellent vintage condition, with all stones present although several have dulled or darkened. The enameling is in very good shape, but I suspect that it has been re-enameled by a previous owner. The clip is tight and holds well. The piece is signed "Trifari" and "Des. Pat. No. 125848" on the back.
