French Bird Motif Hand Painted Porcelain and Silver Scent Bottle - Circa 1880
This hand-painted scent bottle is wonderful with it's seven colorful birds and variety of scenic accents. The seven birds are of different species placed within a framework of flowers, trees and leaves. The cap of the bottle has a bird placed at the center top encircled with pink roses, small blue flowers and green leaves. The body of the bottle has four different bird scenes. Two contain single birds with the other scenes containing two birds interacting. In the foreground you will find vivid flowers, leaves and trees and in the background light-colored, shadow like vegetation. Completing the bottle are patterned French silver mountings.
The handpainted motifs are in excellent plus condition with no chips or scratches through the paint nor fading of colors. The porcelain is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, scratches/abrasions or crazing. On the bottom rim you will find an approximate 1/16 x 3/32" oval mark on the white porcelain (see top of photo # 7). It has a somewhat on-again off-again linear outline and a very tiny light line of missing surface only porcelain. This is not a chip per se nor a repair - I can only describe it as a form of a bruise. The base of the bottle has a dusty rose colored floral and leaf motif. As the motif is not shadowy like the background nor multicolored like the foreground in the birds scenes I am wondering if it is some form of factory mark.
The silver mounts are in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, scratches or repairs. The hinge is all original and in smooth working order. The bottle closes with a friction method and stays firmly closed when bottle is shaken. The mounting contains a pattern comprised of thin running horizontal lines with a minute circle evenly spaced through their center. The pattern has excellent definition and when I run my fingernail across it I can feel the ridges to the line pattern. Both the top and bottom rim contain a very small touch mark that appears to be the French Boars Head which guarantees 800 silver or better (see photo # 7 black arrows). The bottle also contains a clear glass internal stopper that appears to be the original, fits firmly and is free of chips or cracks.
The bottle stands 2 1/4 inches tall with a 1 1/2 inch diameter through the widest point of the body. A delightful hand-painted bottle with hard-to-find subject matter for your collection.
