Johan G Kjaerland was a well known Norwegian silversmith and enamelist from the turn-of-the-century. He was out of business by about 1920. This beautiful multi-colored Plique a Jour butterfly is a wonderful example of his work. If you are unfamiliar with plique think stained glass windows. The glass enamel is fired into the open areas, called cells, of the butterfly allowing light to shine through.
The plique is in excellent condition with no missing cells. With close inspection with a 10 power loupe you can find a few spots of crazing as can be normal due to age. The plique is comprised of a wonderful mix of colors of medium peacock blue, emerald, orange, yellow and a touch of cobalt blue. The sterling is in excellent plus condition with no rips, dents, holes, deep scratches or repairs. Note the fine mil-grain like surface to the antennas as well as the rims to the plique enamel cells. The pin hinge, pin stick & the C clasp are all original & in smooth working order. The pin stick has a slight curve and a good point. The vermeil (a form of gold plate on silver) is in excellent plus condition. It is even toned and bright without being gaudy. This pin was evidently someone's prized possession and only worn on special occasions.
The marks are on the backside of the body as seen in photo. JGK the makers initials and 925S for sterling silver. The butterfly measures 2 1/8" wide X 1 7/8" tall. A super addition to a butterfly jewelry collection & a pin that any woman would enjoy wearing.

LAYAWAY POLICY:We offer layaway for individual or multiple item sales over $200.00.
Your 1st. payment is due upon confirmation of your Purchase Order & each following payment is due on that date each month. Payments include shipping (free in USA - Buyer to pay for International) & tax if a State is charging for internet sales. If you cancel or return your layaway item you will be mailed a check for your refund minus Paypal fees as applicable as Paypal does not refund their fees. Please Note: A cancelled layaway Paypal fees are covered in the 10% cancellation fee. Payments must be made on time or we reserve the right to cancel your layaway & refund your money minus all fees.
