In days gone by they had some really cool items that were for great uses & Lorgnettes fall into that category. No lady would be caught dead outside her home in eye glasses if possible. Lorgnettes enabled her to have her reading glasses inserted into a stylish accessory for menus, theater programs & just superior attitude. They gave her wonderful style instead of a bookish look. This great lorgnette has super Art Nouveau design work. Both the front and the back of the lorgnette are identical.
The pattern definition is in excellent plus condition. Note the well defined pattern with dimensional high and low points and accent lines. Just beautiful condition & pure extreme Art Nouveau design. The sterling is in excellent minus condition with no rips, holes, dents or repairs. With close inspection you can find an approximate 3/8" long line of separation to the handle seam (see photo # 4). There is also a little bit of roughness to one end of the screw inserted through the spring/lens covers at the top of the lorgnette. It is unknown if this is original or from an old repair.
The lenses are intact with no chips or cracks, and have just the occasional tiny spot of surface abrasion or faint tiny scratch. Neither lens has any magnification, these were evidently used only for attitude. The spring movement is in smooth working order. We do recommend that if you use these you support the spring's movement due to spring age.
It always amazes us when we find something this well designed with no makers mark. The only mark we find is "STERLING" located at the base of her right side hair curl on both the front and back lens cover. The lorgnette measures approximately 5 1/4" long by 1 1/4" wide. A superb Art Nouveau designed lorgnette for your collection.
