This beautiful pin is in superb condition and does have a small ring where a drop down bale could be added to become a pin/pendent combination. The ring was originally for a chain and safety pin. The interior area of the pin has four areas of swirling curlicues accenting the moonstones. The curlicues have a very even with good depth notched surface giving the illusion of a mil-grained rim. The four outer cabochons have additional accents with each having three small gold balls.
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, cracks, dents, holes, scratches, abrasions or repairs. The pin hinge, pin stick and C clasp are all the originals in smooth working order. The pin stick is steel as can be found in the Victorian period. It has a good point and is fairly straight with a small curve located at the point. On the backside of the pin's frame (see insert last photo and red arrow) is that small ring. You could have a drop down bale attached there to be able to use the pin as a pendent. The prongs for holding the stones all appear to be the originals. Some are not there but I believe this to be original to manufacture. My opinion is due to the condition of the surface of the base of the missing prongs as well as their position to a cabochon. The stones are not millimeter perfect as you would find today in a pin. They have slight irregular base roundness as well as having a slight different diameter measurement so the stones appear to overlap some of the missing prongs by a hair.
The eight moonstones are in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, nicks, deep scratches or nasty surface abrasions. I did find with my loupe a flea bite on one stone as well as some minute surface scratches through out the stones as would be expected from careful and loving usage. As stated previously the moonstones are not perfect in their measurement. They are approx. 1/4" in diameter and range from approx. 3/32" to 6/32" tall. They are extremely well matched in color being a lovely very light blue gray in their coloration. They have a very equal shimmer/sheen (adularescence) commonly called opalescence. They all are firm in their attachment to the mounting.
There is no gold purity or makers marks on the pin so Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. with of course the exception of the steel pin stick. The pin measures 2" long x 1" tall.
