This Stevengraph bookmark has a lovely poem from Tennyson that fits beautifully with the title on the piece. The top 2 1/8" portion contains scrolling decoration and the title. Below that you find an approx. 1 1/4" winter image of a home and fir trees. Next we have an approx. 2" area containing the poem. At the base of the bookmark you find a Christian decoration and a silk tassel.

The bookmark has some soiling as can be seen in the photos with the majority in the top 1". None of the silk creating the wording or decor is snagged or missing. The backside has areas of horizontal loose threads original to manufacture that I am reporting to be accurate. The top edge and bottom triangle are secure in their fold downs. The last photo shows some horizontal white lines thru the bookmark. This is some still connected together separation in the weave of the background silk fabric. There are no large gaping holes or rips. But light does shine thru the still connected threads as well as a small approx. 3/8" definite separation located just above the first "morn,". If it helps think of a 3/8" cut into a piece of paper. The edge borders are intact with one exception again the cut just above the first "morn,". The backside bottom contains the T. Stevens and Coventry mark as well as the English Registration symbol containing the 1st of August 1871 date. The actual bookmark measures approx. 6 3/4" long x 1 5/8" wide and with the tassel is 8 3/8" long.

*****The following quote came from a website specializing in Stevengraph items.*****

"The information contained in these listings was initially derived from Geoffrey Godden's book Stevengraphs and other Victorian silk pictures. The late John High, a then member of the Stevengraph Collectors Association, very kindly gave me access to his un-published lists. Thomas Stevens invented the title "STEVENGRAPH", and the first recorded use of this title was on the paper backing label of his woven silk bookmarks, in 1876. Stevens also later named his factory in Coventry, "Stevengraph Works" and this again first appears on the bookmark backing label of 1878 - 1880. Today it is assumed the Stevengraph title applies only to his woven silk pictures. As these however did not appear until May 1879, it is evident Stevens intended the title to include his silk bookmarks, portraits and postcards, as well as his pictures. The key dates are: Bookmarks - first Stevens bookmark registered May 1862. Pictures - first scenic picture registered in May 1879 (though possibly first made 1874 ). Portraits - first Stevens portraits appear in early 1886. Postcards - first appear in July 1903 (although sold by R.T. Morgan)."
