Our vintage spider is extremely well done with a lot of detail. Note the intense texture on those eight legs as well as high polished gold details of eyes, pinchers and irregular lines of gold on his head. His body and head have been done in a lovely shade of pumpkin translucent enamel that appears to contain some form of extremely minute, possibly metallic, specks. The pumpkin color has then been accented with tiny lines of black and white opaque enamel on it's surface.
The gold is in excellent condition with no cracks, rips, dents, missing pieces, nasty scratches, ugly abrasions or repairs. You will find as is often the case in later vintage jewelry some of those flaws of pits and tiny fissures in the casting. None of these are large enough to weaken the structure of the pin. The pin hinge, pin stick and clasp all appear to be the originals in smooth working order. The spider and pin hinge are yellow gold but the pin stick and clasp are white gold but they do appear to be original. The pin stick has a good point and has a light curve possibly due to some hallmarks.
The enamel is excellent with no cracks, scratches, abrasions or noted repairs. It is done in the flow on style, not contained within rims. So with a loupe you will see along some edges, as is normal to the style, very minute spots where the enamel does not meet the side edge of the gold.
The pin has an 18K as well as a 750 (European for 18Kt) impressed on the pin stick. There is also another mark that was not evenly applied that we are assuming to be the makers mark. We believe our spider to possibly be Italian as they did some lovely and well detailed enamel jewelry in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. The pin measures approx. 1 9/16" long x 15/16" at it's widest point.
