This aesthetic locket is wonderful with it's floral design of mixed metal work and gold textures. Both the locket and it's bale are not an extreme high polished gold but have a soft matte finish surface with green gold, silver and rose gold applied textured design elements. The 4 flowers and 2 buds are silver, the stems, flower centers and exterior locket rim are rose gold and the leaves are green gold. The locket cover has an applied delicate rope rim. While the locket itself has an applied scroll and beaded outer rim with an un-patterned backside.
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks, deep scratches or abrasions. I found what appears to be one minor repair. The locket cover's floral of a lily with leaves and stem is done with a form of rivet attachment. One rivet appears to have been beefed up with lead solder (see photo # 7). You do see as expected the common light surface scuffing that is found on antique and vintage jewelry (see any photo). The locket closes extremely tight and definitely stays closed. It's hinge is all original in working order. All of the applied metal work is there, is original and without repair. The locket's bale is original and has a good sized opening for a sturdy chain, silk cord or ribbon. The interior of the locket has what appears to be it's original frame and piece of glass. The glass has no cracks or nasty scratches across it's visible surface. But it's outer edge rims either have roughness or a build up of residue from the deterioration of the very old photo. Regretfully I do not have a very fine, thin jeweler's tool to safely lift the frame out for inspection so it is not damaged.
The locket measures 2 3/16" tall, 2 5/8" tall when counting the bale, and is 1 5/16" at it's widest point. It weighs 19.4 grams with it's glass cover in place. The piece has no gold content marks as can be common to the time period. Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. gold. To enable us to guarantee the purity of all applied metals Rich would have to take a rubbing which could damage the pieces or their attachment to the locket. We do not want to do this as it's applied design is so perfectly intact. But common to the time period when green and rose gold were evident they were the same karat as the base item. Our last photo is of a pair of earrings we currently have listed, Item 727, that I think go extremely well with the locket making a nice set.
The Aesthetic Movement or Period as it can be called is considered to have originated in England in the 1860's and ran till approx. 1900. It was seen in basically all forms of life - art, literature, furniture, etc. and in our example - jewelry. It contained a prominent use of motifs from nature, IE: flowers, leaves, birds, insects, water scenes with lily pads and cat tails and even peacock feathers. Japanese design was an important influence to the period including it's mixed metal art form containing combinations of all colors of gold, silver, bronze and copper.
