This wonderful Bek pendent is in outstanding condition. The pendent is comprised of a lovely smoky lavender colored plique a jour focal point accented with an oval mother of pearl cabochon and finished with a pearl drop. If you are not familiar with plique a jour it is glass enamel fired into open work frames called cells-think stained glass windows. Jugendstil is a form of Art Nouveau jewelry created by Germany and Austria that is a very desirable collectable today.
The sterling is all intact with no rips, dents, holes, cracks or repairs. The clasp is the original and is in smooth, firm working order with a nice click when closing. The hand made chain is all original and shows no repairs. Any repairs would be easy to see as the silver in this necklace is a very pale gold color We don't know if this is the original color or if the necklace was once a standard gold plated shade. The plique is also all original with no cracks, chips, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. The mother of pearl cabochon and the pearl drop are also excellent with no damage.
The Ernst Bek Co. was German in origin and existed from approx. 1897-1934 with branches in Birmingham, Paris, Toronto, New York, Newark and India. Mr. Bek became ill and gave the company to his sons in approx. 1934. It was then renamed and a new hallmark designed.
The marks are on the backside of the pendent as seen in the photo. They are Depose (French for registered - we use patent), Sterling and the Bek butterfly hallmark. The pendent measures from wing tip to wing tip 1 1/2". From a wing tip straight down to the bottom level of the pearl drop it also measures 1 1/2". The chain is 14 3/8" long.
