This circa 1875 cameo is beautifully carved with super detail. Note her lovely and extremely visible facial features including her brow and nostril, well defined curls in her hair and the illusion of soft drape to her veil. The wonderful dark chocolate background of the cameo is unusual and extremely attractive.
The 18kt. mounting consists of a collar surrounding the cameo with an amazing group of individually hand crafted and applied parts. We start with a delicate rope patterned wire attached to the collar. Then the 6 curlicues have a notched edge rim. We have 4 oval boxes that appear to be hand made with an application of 4 balls as well as 6 rope wire circles and an outer rope edge top rim. And finally we have 4 flowers with 6 rope wire circles for petals and 2 balls one being the stamen. All of these rope circles, rope rims and tiny balls were applied by hand to their separate parts, just an unbelievable amount of time consuming workmanship!
The agate cameo is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, scratches abrasions or repairs. As sometimes commonly found there are some light rough edges/bites to some of the straight lined rims. They are often original from carving or could also be from usage over the cameo's many years.
The gold is in excellent minus condition with no rips, dents, holes, scratches or nasty abrasions. You can find some unobtrusive evidence of rub marks for gold testing. With extreme intense inspection and counting every single applied piece I found the following. Top oval missing partial center circle and ball but no visible evidence of ever being there. Both curlicues at 3 o'clock show some addition of gold, possibly original needed from curling the part as the gold is an excellent match in color ( last photo-right insert). Bottom oval missing one rope circle with visible evidence it was originally there. Top curlicue at 9 o'clock has a definite repair-see last photo left insert. The pin hinge, pin stick, covered C clasp and bale are all the originals in smooth working order. The pin stick appears to be a faintly gold plated steel pin as could often be found in this time period. It is fairly straight and has a good point. The C clasp has a cover so the pin point doesn't stab the owner when worn as a necklace-a nice quality feature. The bale has an approx. 5/16" x 1/8" opening which makes it usable for a good sized chain as well as a silk cord or ribbon.
The piece has no gold purity marks as can be common to the time period so Rich acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 18kt. The actual cameo is 1 3/16" tall x 15/16" wide. In the mounting the piece is 1 3/4" tall x 1 7/16" wide. A beautifully done antique cameo in wonderful condition for it's approx. 140 years of age.
