This sweet mosaic lid trinket box is surely Italian in origin. The style of the daisies and all colors thru out are found in the Italian pieces. The daisies are white with a three color yellow/gold/rust center tile. The occasional bud tile is also the same three colors. The leaf tiles average a mix of three colors that include a greenish yellow, several shades of grass green, three shades of browns, rust, khaki, very dark chocolate and possibly a few black. The background and border are the Italian often used dark aqua and black centered white tiles.

This box's mosaic work is done with tiny glass tiles ranging from 1/16" long to a 1/4" long fitted and glued next to each other in an extremely well done tight fit. It's tile sizes and their fit lets us know it is older as the later pieces commonly had larger tiles with a less tight fit. When inspecting with a 10 power loupe I find no missing tiles or obvious glass replacements. Someone out there in the repair world uses what we believe to be a form of paper mache to repair these mosaics. This piece has none of that in the entire lid! You can find some cracked or chipped tiles with your eyes as can be common in these items. But there is nothing that we feel detracts from the lovely floral motif.

The majority of the metal box appears to be a brown tone, possibly brass, base metal. The box was originally gold plated but the plate is estimated at a minimum of 50% gone and it's remains are un-even in tone. The bottom of the box appears to be a white base metal. The interior lid is also a base metal with what appears to be some form of plate that enabled it to be a mirror. The hinge is all original and in smooth working order with no nasty wiggle. The closure is a curlicue that closes over a horizontal ridge. It closes with a loud snap and stays closed when the box is shaken. The four feet are all original with no repair to their joints. When sitting on the table one foot is a bit uneven by approx. 1/32". The interior of the box has what appears to be a silk like interior. The sides are done with a silk covered paper. Two top rim areas are loose as the glue has deteriorated from age. The bottom of the box is done with a button tuck silk pillow. It is solid in it's attachment to the box and is firm in shape with it's original buttons. It does have fraying evident on it's fabric surface but no holes thru to it's base stuffing.

The box measures a little over 2 1/4" tall x approx. 2 5/16' square. The interior of the box measures 5/8" deep thru the center of that puffy pillow. The box has no metal or country of origin marks.
