This 20's faux jeweled frame is in super condition and will make a great addition to your jeweled vanity items, frame collection or just a special frame for that important photo. The metal front of the frame consists of a tiny floral open work base with scalloped side borders then outer edge rope like borders. The carnelian jeweled motifs have been built on patterned metal pieces and then applied to the base frame. Besides the applied motifs there are also 16 collar mounted stones on the front base of the frame.
The 8 applied carnelian motifs contain 8 large oval green (emerald) stones, 8 medium round red (ruby) stones and 2 different sized smaller round stones that are suppose to be rubies, emeralds, amethysts and sapphires. The 16 collar mounted stones are oval green and red representing emeralds and rubies. Accenting all of the jeweling are black and white enamel curlicues. Again ALL jewels are faux, either glass or paste.
The faux jeweling is excellent and all stones are there but it is unknown if any are replacements. None have serious chips causing missing portions showing their base mountings. If you do a very intense inspection with a 10 power loupe you will find some surface abrasions, scratches or nicks and maybe even a crack. Sorry I went cross eyed trying to inspect those small stones. NOTE: the large oval green stones in the corner motifs are NOT scratched, they contain an interior pattern meant to make them look like real emeralds.
The 48 enamel curlicues are in excellent minus condition. Of the white, approx. 8 of the 32 have anything from a nick/chip to crazing/crack with 6 of the 8 actually missing a bit and/or a portion of enamel down to base metal (see photo # 3). Of the 16 black, approx. 4 have the same flaws with 3 showing a bit of base metal. There may have been some restoration to some of the white enamel at one time during the life of the frame.
The metal of the frame is in excellent condition with no cracks, rips, dents, holes, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. It has an easel stand as well as a small ring for hanging. The easel's hinge is all original and in smooth working order. It is firmly attached with no wiggle. The quality of the frame's design is lovely. Even the side rim and the easel have been patterned. The frame has been plated. The 8 applied patterned pieces have a rose tone. The balance of the frame has a gold tone. The front open work base and the side edge rims are each nicely even in tone on their own areas and contain a pleasant, not gaudy, brightness. The backside's top edge and the easel are a darker, more mellow color and are uneven in tone depth. The frame is very substantial with a good weight, we believe it to be a combination of bronze and brass.
It is unknown if the glass is original or a replacement but it's visible area shows no chips, cracks, nasty scratches or serious abrasions. The backside appears to be a cotton heavy velveteen. It is unknown if it is original or a later replacement but I lean to original. It does have some all over faint disruption to it's nap as well as missing nap where the two bottom edge flanges slide over the fabric to hold in the back piece.
There is no company makers mark but on the top back side is "Austria" (see insert- # 5). The photo is not an original and has no value as it is only a photocopy of Maria Montez. The photo area is 9 1/16" tall x 7 wide. The frame is 10 1/2" tall x 8 5/16" wide.
