Deldare Ware was made in America by the Buffalo Pottery Co. in Buffalo N.Y. The company was created by the Larkin Soap Company to make what was called a premium gift, a merchandising incentive that the company started with soap dishes. In 1908 they originated Deldare Ware with patterns of English village scenes hand painted on an olive green background. This coloration was produced in 1908-1909 and again in 1923-1925. In 1911, for that year only, they produced another color entitled Emerald Deldare Ware.
Our cup and saucer is the olive green coloration and is in excellent plus condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. Even though the colors are basically dark earth tones their coloration is even and bright. The top and bottom rims of both the cup and saucer are all original with no touch ups. The only thing I could find was normal and expected all over crazing. Note that the cup has the same village buildings around it's body, including one in the bottom of the cup, as those that encircle the saucers edge. As a wonderful finishing touch the interior of the cup has a running scene encircling it's top edge. The pattern's title "Ye Olden Days" is located on the saucer below the brown paver that the gentleman's cane is on.
The cup has an almost 3 1/2" dia. top and is 2 1/8" tall with the saucer having a 5 7/8" dia. The last photo shows the marks for both pieces. The date marks are very faint and I had to use a loupe to read them. The saucer is definitely 1909. The cup has a crazing line going across the last number of the date which makes it difficult to read. I believe it is an 8 for 1908.
The Buffalo Pottery Co. evolved into creating china for individual purchase as well as commercial enterprises like railroads, restaurants, cruise ships and even the military. Have you ever seen Chessie the cat? It was a white dish with a cat sleeping in bed, showing just its face and ear that was created by Buffalo in 1933 for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. But despite that wonderful and famous cat Buffalo's most popular and collected product line is considered to be Deldare Ware.
