This Victorian locket is in outstanding condition and even still retains it's original bale. It has a lot of hand applied assembly done by a very steady hand of an experience goldsmith. Note the beautiful applied wire work done with a combination of un-patterned and rope style wire. Then there are those wonderful curved openwork patterned pieces on the sides and base of the locket as well as all of those various sized ball accents. Just great workmanship! The final and best part of the locket is the very nice sized, well done, stone cameo placed in the center.
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. All parts to the locket are original and there are no missing pieces. The backside is a flat un-patterned sheet of gold with a satin finish. It does show some normal scuff/scratching as expected with pre-owned gold that I am only reporting to be accurate. The interior of the locket has it's photo rim in super condition with no dents or un-even surface. If you place a photo in the locket be sure when you replace your rim that you keep the top at the top and the bottom at the bottom as rims were hand crafted to fit their frames. The locket has a very thin piece of glass that is probably original that is without cracks, chips, surface scratches/abrasions. The cameo locket lid just folds closed and stays closed when lightly shaken. There is not and never has been any form of catch or friction closure to the lid.
The cameo is hard stone carnelian and done with a lot of fine detail. She has a lovely face, a lot of braids and waves in her hair and drape to her robe. When it was carved there was a nice section between the white and reddish brown colors that was a blend of the two that is a somewhat medium dusty rose that the carver used as the cameo's background. The cameo has been inspected with a 10 power loupe and is in super condition. The only thing I could find was a minute chip (smaller then 1/64") of a missing link on her necklace.
The locket has no gold marks so Rich acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. It weighs a total of 23.6 grams (of course with the stone cameo in place). The locket measures 2 5/8" tall from the top of the bale to the base of the locket and is 1 7/16" at widest point. The visible photo area is 9/16" x 15/16". The bale is a super size as they used ribbon, cord and chains during this time period so the bale will take an approx. 1/4" dia. chain. A great Victorian locket in superb condition for a collection or that special photo.
