In days gone by they had some really cool items that were for great uses & lorgnettes fall into that category. No lady would be caught dead outside her home in eye glasses if possible. Lorgnettes enabled her to have her reading glasses inserted into a stylish accessory for menus, theater programs & just superior attitude. They gave her wonderful style instead of a bookish look. This great lorgnette has classic Art Nouveau design work as expected from Unger with both the front and the back of the lorgnette being identical.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no cracks, rips, holes, dents, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. The pattern definition is in excellent plus condition. Note the well defined pattern with dimensional high and low points and accent lines. Her facial features and hair on both sides are well defined with crisp accents, original design curves and a super nose and chin without dents or holes. The flowers above her head as well as her flowing hair and flower buds on the handle are just as well defined. The vermeil (a form of gold plating) is in excellent plus condition being very even toned and bright without being gaudy. I can't decide if the handle has a hint less brightness or if it is an illusion due to the depth of pattern not being as great in this area.
The lenses are intact with no chips or cracks, and have just a couple faint tiny surface scratches. The lenses do have a small amount of magnification. The spring movements are excellent and in smooth working order. We do recommend that if you use these you support the spring's movement in and out of the case as well as the unfolding of the glasses due to the springs age. You do this by supporting the lenses as they move in and out and unfold so they just don't fling themselves outwards.
The mark is inside the glass case area close to the handle. I took a picture the best I could to show that it is there. It is the standard Unger circular hallmark with the overlapping UB and STERLING 925 FINE. The lorgnette measures approximately 4 5/8" long by 1 3/16" at widest point. With the lorgnettes fine overall condition it was either not used very much or was carefully used and stored. A superb Art Nouveau designed lorgnette by a top company in outstanding condition for your collection!
