The border on the bowl of this tea strainer is very tasteful with it's pattern of well defined and softly curved swirls. It is extremely attractive and draws your attention yet is simplistic enough to allow the interior bowl's hole pattern to be a wonderful focal point. I love the unusual addition of an elongated oval hole used in the star-very different.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, cracks, holes, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. When I held the strainer up to the light and tilted it back and forth I found no holes! All I could find were a couple of those tiny pin point sized faint indentations as can be commonly found due to usage and age. The center of the strainer has all it's original holes intact. The wood handle is nicely even in color and in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, nasty scratches or abrasions. It is firm in it's attachment to the sterling with just a hint of a wiggle. The top of the interior bowl at the location of the handle (photo # 5) has presentation engraved in a lovely script of "MCC" (photo # 6).
The marks are on the backside as seen in the photos. They read: Frank M. Whiting Co. hallmark: "STERLING" and "2284" (strainer's model/design number). The strainer measures approx. 7" long x 3 3/16" at widest portion of bowl. The interior base of the bowl is impossible to measure due to it's curve so the diameter of the recessed interior is 2". A lovely tea strainer in superb condition to use or add to a collection.
