Victorian ladies watch chains were a fabulous fashion accessory in their day as well as a major piece of jewelry. They came in all different sizes of chain width with small to large slides but all were long with a latch at the end to attach your watch. You wore it wrapped once around your neck like a regular necklace and then draped the chain in a curve towards your side. You then tucked your watch into the small pocket usually found in your belt/sash. Our watch chain is one of the wider chain-larger slide versions. It has one of the standard chains with a linkage that I just love and wonder how it was made. Each chain link is comprised of two rings with each ring having a recessed center. This gives the chain texture as well as a great look. It's slide is just as attractive with hand attached design components that include green gold leaves in the center design and a light rose gold leaf crown at the top of the slide. You also find granulated surface on the leaves and tassel cap, a form of mil-grained rims on the curlicues, hand engraved exterior borders, black enamel and seed pearl accent as well as a wonderful tassel, (not commonly found) at it's base. Just a beautiful watch chain!
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks, nasty scratches/abrasions or repairs. The chain linkage all appears to be original with no repairs. The tassel fringe is all there with proper length and it's original ball ends. The slide moves with light drag along the chain and the watch latch has working spring movement. I can't tell for sure if the seed pearls are full rounds or half pearls but they all appear to be original in their ball/prong mounts. They are well matched and are a cream in color. The black enamel is all original with no repairs. With a 10 power loupe you can see a few spots where there is a surface nick as is common. But they are so shallow that the enamel all appears evenly dark.
The only marks on the watch chain is a "14" for 14kt. on the interior of the latch. Rich has acid tested several spots and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. throughout. The chain weighs a nice 50.7 grams of gold but is still very comfortable to wear. The chain opening for your neck is 20 1/4". The slide measures 3" tall from the top of it's leaf crown to the base of it's tassel and is 3/4" wide thru the center of the oval slide. A beautiful chain in superb condition for that woman who loves Victorian jewelry.
