It is always so nice to find something of this age in such super condition. The majority of the locket is handcrafted with all engraved surfaces on both sides and a wonderful wrapped gold wire and ball applied upper frame decor. The front engraving has classic scrolled leaves thru the upper left and a lake side cottage with a background of trees and a hill on it's lower right. The backside engraving has a very minute gadroon pattern border with the interior containing lovely flowing script presentation of what appears to be "GCH" (or maybe not). Just fabulous hand work, nothing cookie cutter here!
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks, deep scratches/abrasions, missing applied pieces or repairs. The hinge on the locket lid is all original without repairs and is in smooth working order. It closes with a loud click and stays firmly closed. Both photo rims are there and have un-even surface from being removed over the years. Both photo covers are there, one feels like plastic the other like glass. I am not going to open the rims to check their material as they are both free of cracks or nasty scratches. If you remove the rim to insert your own photo be sure to keep the top at the top and bottom at the bottom. Rims were hand crafted in this time period to fit each individual locket.
The locket was originally a fob or chatelaine locket so it has a nice sized approx. 1/8" interior dia. top ring. There are no gold content marks as is common to the period. Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. and it weighs 4.9 grams with the photo covers in place. The actual circular locket measures just under 3/4" in dia. with approx. 9/16" photo areas. Minus the ring for the chain the locket measures 1" tall x 7/8" at widest point. A super Victorian fob locket for a man's watch chain or to wear with your favorite photos next to your heart.
