The Victorian time period had some of the most amazing "toys". Imagine being at that ball in your fabulous evening gown and having this fashion accessory on your finger holding that delicate lace hankie or scarf so that it swirls gracefully when your partner whirls you around in a waltz. This hankie holder has a classic design of the time period. The two piece clip has been all hand engraved with minute curves/swirls giving the background a textured, granulated surface. The outer edge and a stripe thru the center were left with smooth, high polished surface. The stripe was then hand engraved to give each side a recessed border and the center a recessed background under a somewhat Greek Key design. These recessed areas were then filled with fired on opaque black enamel. To open the clip you slide that tiny ring on the handle downwards towards the finger ring and to close you slide it upwards next to the clip.

The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, cracks, holes, nasty scratches/abrasions or repairs. That lovely engraved textured background surface is well defined and equal in appearance. The ring for opening and closing the clip moves with very good drag and stays in it's open and closed positions. The chain is all intact with no visible repairs. The only thing I could find was one of the small, outer edge, flame like shaped rims has more inwards curve then the other three. It has no cracks, wrinkles, creases or evidence of repairs and is very minor but we have declared it to be accurate. The black enamel is very dark and has good depth on the majority of both sides of the clip. It has a lighter look due to missing height in the bottom area of both sides (see photos 6 & 7).

The piece has no marks as is common to the period. Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. The handle and clip measure just a hair under 2 1/4" long and the chain measures 2" long. The closed clip's interior is a hair oval in shape and measures approx. 1/2" in dia. The clip is 3/4" wide across the exterior from the large flame to large flame's outer rim. The finger ring is an approx. 5 1/2 on my size pole and the piece weighs a total of 5.6 grams. A super piece for a hankie holder, gold "toy" or Victorian accessory collection!
