This smelling salts bottle has a lovely, very well done 1 1/2" dia. hand painted enamel portrait of a woman who I believe is Marie Antoinette on it's lid. The enamel is in excellent plus condition with no crazing, cracks, chips, nicks, deep scratches or repairs. Tilting the enamel for angle & light with a 10 power loop you can find a few of those 1/64" & smaller flea bites or small occasional surface only scratches normal to use. She is a great quality portrait with wonderful shading through out. Note the lovely facial features, fine hair, fabric folds & gold foil accents in her hat. The silver lid & collar are in excellent condition with no rips, tears, dents, deep scratches or repairs. The hinge is all original in smooth working order & the lid closes with a loud click. The collar is firmly adhered to glass. The interior's collar rims & the interior of the lid have fairly even toned light remains of vermeil or gold wash. You can find on the silver from usage a few : very very faint surface scratches, light surface nicks that range from a bite to 1/32" long & a 1/8" long line (photo # 6 red <1) surface indentation. The indentation red <2 that you see in same photo is a crimp line for closure that corresponds to collars closure bump. The exterior collar rim has uneven impressed marks of a makers mark & 935. The interior lid has marks of lion-crescent moon & crown-935 (silver content)-makers mark (resembles a five petal flower, prob. a Viennese maker). I did the best I could for these marks but they came out a bit blurry as my camera lens could not get into the lid close enough (photo # 6). The glass is in excellent plus condition with no cracks, chips, deep scratches or repairs. It is clear & clean with none of that nasty, sometimes found, heavy residue from the salts. Tilting the bottle for angle & light with a 10 power loop you can find less then expected minute surface scratches & flea bites from use. I found a visible impurity approx. 1/16" long x 1/32" tall seen in photo # 5. The base has a cut faceted star & evidence of less then normal light surface scratching from vanity. The bottle has what appears to be it's original hand cut internal stopper in excellent plus condition. I found no chips or nicks, just a few of those minute cutting oops. It fits well with no rocking. The bottle is approx 3' tall with a 1 9/16" base dia. A lovely bottle for an enamel collection or to decorate a bath or bedroom vanity.
