This 19th. century cameo is just outstanding quality. The simple but elegant yellow gold mounting has a superbly well defined and deep repousse pattern 1/8" wide border. The chalcedony carved cameo is a work of art with lovely and graceful facial features and deep, well rounded curls and waves in her hair. Holding her hair in place is the carved illusion of tiny, beautifully round, pearls. The carved white portion of chalcedony is 5/16" at it's deep center with the entire piece of stone being just a hair under 7/16" at the deepest point. Cameos this thick and deeply cut are rare. Just superb design and quality thru out!
The gold is in excellent plus condition with no rips, cracks, dents, holes, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. The pin hinge, pin stick and C clasp are all the originals in smooth working order. The pin has a bit of wave at it's end and a good point. I am sure the tiny loop at the top is for a bale to be added as it is way to small for a chain clasp to fit thru. As there is no bale we can only assume the original owner didn't want it but you can easily have your jeweler attach one.
The hard stone chalcedony cameo is also in excellent condition with no cracks, nasty scratches, abrasions, missing design areas or repairs. I did find a chip that is located on that point at the bottom back of her neck (see last photo). It is on the bottom backside next to the gray portion of the chalcedony. As this would be a very strange and hard to reach spot for a damage chip to be positioned I feel there is a good possibility it is original to manufacture as it could have been a result of the high polished work. There is also evidence of the polishing wheel cutting in just a hair to deep on the bottom rim of the bust again next to the gray. The high polished gray surface of the stone is beautifully done and has no nasty scratches or abrasions to mar it's surface.
The 15 CT. mark is on the backside bottom of the mounting as seen in the photo. The pin is a total of 2 3/16" tall x 1 5/8" wide with the carved portrait being approx. 2 1/8" tall x 1 1/8" wide. A superbly carved, 19th century quality cameo at a very nice price.
