Victorian 14Kt. Ladies Watch Pin / Necklace Combination with Iolite and Black Enamel Accent - Circa 1880
These Victorian combination pieces are so inventive and extremely attractive with their different design components. Our center focal point is an assembled pendent with applied swirls and curlicues that have a twisted rope like top rim. On the pendent top you will find hand engraved minute swirls giving the surface texture. At it's upper center you will find a raised platform containing a prong mounted, faceted, oval Iolite gemstone. At it's base you will find a very minute dot patterned leaf with hand engraved detail lines. Hanging from the pendent are matching tassels that have very distinctively designed caps. Completing the piece is a lovely intricately made chain.
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks, nasty scratches or abrasions. All of the applied pieces are there including the tiny balls at the base of all of the strands of fringe. The only thing I could find was a repair (last photo) in the upper half of one fringe strand. It is located at the back portion of the tassel so it doesn't show when the piece is worn. The chain closures are located at both sides of the pendent, see photo # 7 red > for one in open position. They are both flanges that fit into clasp boxes. They fit very firmly into their boxes with a loud click and stay in place! You just remove the chain to wear the pendent portion as a pin. A watch or locket may be added to the center bottom hook if desired. The pin hinge, pin stick, C clasp and watch hook are all the originals in smooth working order. The pin stick is straight and has a good point. The 1/4" x 3/16" oval Iolite gemstone appears to be original to the piece as we see no disruption to the prongs and is firmly seated. With my eyes the black enamel accent appears nicely intact. With a 10 power loupe you can see that the ultra thin lines just above and thru the leaves are missing about 50% of their enamel. Those lines are just so thin I didn't realize they had enamel until I inspected the area.
There are no gold content marks as is common to the period. Rich has acid tested in several spots and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. gold throughout. The pin / necklace combo weighs a total of 28 grams with of course the gemstone in place. The pendent / pin portion of the necklace measures 2 3/4" tall from it's curlicue crown at it's top to the base of the ball fringe and is 1 3/16" at widest point. The actual chain (minus both flanges) measures 20 3/4" long but when the chain is attached the width of the top of the pin adds an extra 1" to that measurement. A stunning Victorian piece in super condition for that woman who enjoys true antique jewelry.
