I think this is one of the prettiest lockets we have had in a long time. The patterned top is a wonderful blending of Victorian and Art Nouveau design. It also has a two toned look due to the swirls having a high polished top and the balance of the locket being acid washed for a satin finish. The locket contains a small European Cut diamond placed in the center of the pattern. The design is very inventive as well as being beautiful. The backside is un-patterned and has a satin finished surface. It's great to find a gold locket this old with the original finish!
The locket is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, cracks, holes, nasty scratches/abrasions or repairs. The hinge is all original and the locket closes with a loud click and stays extremely firm in it's closure. The backside has lovely engraved presentation of "Gladys". The interior contains what appears to be both original photo rims. They are rose gold in color but we see this quite often in yellow gold lockets. They both have a bit of uneven surface as can be found from being popped out over the years. You can also find the occasional light scratching on the interior of the locket again from the photo rims being removed that I am reporting to be accurate. If you remove the rims to insert your own photos remove one at a time and be sure to keep the top at the top and bottom at the bottom. Rims were hand crafted in this time period to fit each individual locket side. Both photo areas have some form of plastic photo cover of unknown age that is without cracks, scratches or abrasions.
Both interior sides of the locket contain two marks. One side has a "3" and a triangle with a blurred interior. The other side has a "3" and a sort of "Y". You can also find two sets of faint engraved numbers. In this time period the store would lightly engrave their inventory number on an item. The locket weighs 8.6 grams and has no gold content marks. Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. The bale will take a nice sized, sturdy chain as it has an approx 1/8" x almost 1/16" interior. The locket measures 1 1/8" in dia. x 3/16" deep with the photo areas being a hair under 7/8" in dia. A truly beautiful locket in outstanding condition at a great price.
