18Kt. Gold Essex Crystal Watch Fob of a Yorkshire Terrier - Circa 1880
This great Essex crystal fob has a lovely depicted Yorkie dog with delicate shading and flow to the artistry giving an illusion of fur. Note the realistic dimension to the dog. You can see the rounded end of his nose, feel the curve of his forehead and sink your fingers into that abundance of long fur. My favorite feature is the eyes. At a distance you think they are tiny glass eyes but with a loupe you can see they are definitely painted and if you look close enough you can even see that tiny pink tongue. The crystal was then secured in a 18kt. gold swivel fob with a simple collar mounting rim. This quite possibly could have been a custom piece of a beloved pet. For those of you not familiar with Essex crystals there is a little explanation at the end of the listing.
The crystal is in excellent condition with no cracks, nicks, chips, deep scratches or abrasions. With a 10 power loupe you can find normal and expected tiny faint surface scratches from use over the years. The painting is all intact and the textured silver background has no problems. When using the loupe, at the top rim of the crystal above the intaglio, you can see what appears to be a bit of rough surface on the crystals flat backside. Just a note - DO NOT put essex crystals in ultrasonics or immerse in any liquids - hand clean them ONLY!
The gold fob is in excellent condition with no rips, cracks, dents, holes, deep scratches, abrasions or repairs. The collar mounting has uneven surface around the entire rim most likely from hand crimping the crystal in place. The swivel bar has good tension and goes it's entire 180 degrees. The backside of the fob has a hand crafted and enameled set of applied gold initials that appear to be CE or GE. They are secure on the fob and have no broken or missing areas. The enamel is a dark royal blue in color without repairs. There is all over surface wear and surface flakes to the enamel. With close inspection with a loupe you can see 3 minute specks of base gold peeking thru at the bottom bar of the E.
The gold has no marks so Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 18kt. The circular mounting measures 1" in dia. with the crystal being 3/4" in dia. At the swivel attachment the width is 1 1/8" with the total fob being 1 3/8" tall. A fabulous piece for an Essex crystal collection or to wear as a fob or pendant.
An Essex crystal is a rock crystal (clear quartz) cabochon with an intaglio (recessed) carving done on the flat backside. The intaglio is then painted so when the crystal is viewed from the front the image has a realistic dimensional effect. The backside is sealed with a plain sheet of mother-of-pearl (or another material) to preserved the painting as well as providing a wonderful background. This super art form originated in Belgium around 1860 and was made famous in England. It was used for jewelry, including buttons, as well as decoration on every day items. The subjects most common for men were horses, dogs, foxes and birds and for the ladies florals. Essex crystals retained their popularity until poorly made glass and plastic imitations were extensively made in the 20's
