This stick pin is so cool with wonderful design and in lovely condition. Note the twist pattern simulating rope around the life preserver and the shimmer of red and blue as well as the silver stars in the flag from the use of colored foil.
The gold is in excellent condition with no cracks, rips, dents, holes, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs. The joint of the pin to the decor front of the stick pin is all original, this has always been an original stick pin. With a loupe you can find a few unobtrusive rub spots from gold testing. The side of the preserver has a gold collar mounting that contains a small diamond. The mounting is original to the pin as can be proven by viewing the backside.
The enamel flag is in all intact with no damage or repairs with enamel and foil being bright. The life preserver is a mat finish with the NYLIC being intact and very readable. On both sides of the collar mounting holding the diamond is a small spot of professional enamel repair. When looking at the stick pin straight on it is not noticeable. But when you view the exterior side of the preserver as we do for inspection the repair looks like a 1/16" light cream colored dirty spot (see photo # 3). We believe it is an old repair that has slightly discolored with age. The 1/32" repair spot of the same color at the identical area on the inside rim of the preserver would be next to impossible to damage from wearing the pin so I am going to make an assumption. I think the stick pins were made with the collar mounting empty and depending on your time with the company on certain anniversary years the collar was filled with a colored gem stone. When this one was filled the enamel chipped and was then filled in by the company. The stick pin is also a nice little piece of the company's history. This company was founded in 1845 and is still in business today.
The pin contains no gold or makers mark so Rich has acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt. The top of the pin measures approx. 3/4" in dia. (rope to rope) with the stick pin being a total of 3"tall. A great piece for a collection or for a current New York Life employee to wear on a lapel or use as a tie pin.
