This butterfly is lovely with it's multitude of colors from it's six different components. The entire base surface (backside) of the pin, antenna, legs and top surface of the ruby and sapphire wing sections are rose gold. The top of the pin thru the butterfly's body and diamond wing sections as well as the middle of the ruby and sapphire wing sections are silver. This is due to the fact jewelers were not doing white gold until approximately 1917 and diamonds looked better in silver. I took two photos of the top of the pin at two different angles to give you a good view without shadowed areas.
The gold and silver of the pin are in excellent condition with no cracks, rips, dents, holes, nasty scratches, abrasions or repairs, even all of the hand assembly joints look original. If you look closely you can see a few unobtrusive tiny rub spots where the gold was tested. The pin hinge, pin and C clasp all appear to be the originals in good working order. The pin has just a hint of a curve and has a good point.
The gem stones are all prong and ball mounted. The diamonds are rose cuts, the ruby eyes are cabochon and the ruby and sapphire wing gems are faceted. All of the stones appear to be the originals. The ruby eyes are a slight different color then the wings due to their cut and size with the ruby and sapphire wings being well matched in color. The pearls also appear to be the originals being a soft cream in color with the larger one being a bit more white.
The pin has no marks so Rich has acid tested the gold and will guarantee a minimum of 14 kt. He will not test the silver as he could damage the pin but will guarantee a minimum of 800 silver. The butterfly measures 1 7/16" wide x 7/16" tall (leg to leg). A beautiful, truly antique, butterfly pin in superb condition at a lovely price.
