In days gone by they had some really cool items that were for great uses & Lorgnettes fall into that category. No lady would be caught dead outside her home in eye glasses if possible. Lorgnettes enabled her to have her reading glasses inserted into a stylish accessory for menus, theater programs & just superior attitude. They gave her wonderful style instead of a bookish look. This great lorgnette has classic Art Nouveau design work with both the front and the back of the lorgnette being identical.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no cracks, rips, holes, dents or repairs. The pattern definition is in excellent condition. Note the well defined pattern with dimensional high and low points and accent lines. Just beautiful overall condition. Her facial features and hair on both sides are well defined with crisp accents, original design curves and a super nose and chin without dents or holes. The vermeil (a form of gold plating) is in excellent condition being even toned and bright without being gaudy. There is an occasional bit of silver peeking thru at a few high points - hair, nose, a flower rim - none of these spots scream at you, they just are found when you do a close inspection or the light hits just right. On the bottom of the handle the highest ridge has silver peeking thru and is a bit more obvious.
The lenses are intact with no chips or cracks, and have just a few tiny spots of surface abrasion or faint tiny scratch. The lenses have a small amount of magnification. The spring movement is in smooth working order. We do recommend that if you use these you support the spring's movement in and out due to the springs age.
The sterling and Kees hallmark are inside the glass case area close to the handle. I took a picture the best I could to show it is there. Per Rainwater C.F. Kees had a short life of 1904-1909 and were known for sterling and gold lorgnettes and related items. The lorgnette measures approximately 5" long by 1 1/4" at widest point. A superb Art Nouveau designed lorgnette in great condition for your collection.
