Unger Bros. is considered by most, us included, to be one of the top US Art Nouveau period silversmiths for small items. Just look at the wonderful design of this pin. That lovely flowing hair with beautifully detailed flowers adorning each side of her head. The layered and raised flowers as well as her pierced locks of hair give the pin nice dimension. Note her lovely face with well defined features that is in outstanding condition-any perception from the photo of dents in her face is caused by reflection from the curve to facial features!
The pin is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks or nasty scratches to the design. The pin is of double wall construction meaning her front was stamped out & she was then attached by solder work to a sheet of sterling that is the pin's backside causing a hollow interior. Those 2 minute holes you can see on the backside are original for heat to escape during solder work. The backside has a graceful, lightly curved surface original to manufacture. The pin stick and it's hinge are original to the pin. The locking clasp is a replacement. All are in smooth working order. The pin has curve due to usage and has a good point. The pin hinge is definitely the original but has file marks around it as can be seen in the photo most likely from solder clean up.
The pattern definition is excellent plus. Her facial features are well defined, crisp with original curves. That wonderful nose and chin are all intact with no dents or holes. Her flowers and hair still contain almost all of the fine lined accents and original designed indentation lines that assist in giving the pin it's dimensional look.
The backside of the pin has the combination Unger Bros/Sterling hallmark. The pin measures 1 11/16" tall x 1 13/16" at it's widest point. A lovely example of Unger Bros. jewelry to wear or for an Art Nouveau or Unger Bros. collection.
