F & B Sterling & Glass Oval Jar of Paul & Virginia (Lovers on the Swing) - Circa 1905
This romantic Foster & Bailey pattern of lovers on a swing is affectionately called Paul & Virginia by dealers. It has two lovers sharing a swing on a lovely summer afternoon amid the blooming foliage of a garden. Around the outer rim are curlicues that contain elements of the garden. The glass jar is oval in shape with 12 long, vertical panels cut on its side's surface and 12 smaller cut on the bottom giving the jar a somewhat footed base.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no rips, cracks, holes, dents, scratches, abrasions or repairs. The lid has been held to the light and no holes were found. The rim is well rounded with just the occasional pin point sized surface indentation as found on antique silver. The pattern is nicely crisp & well defined. Note her facial features, their curved arms & legs, as well as some evidence of fingers & toes. There are some of those spots of loss of fine lines in some of the high points like hair, her dress across her knees, leaves & flower petals above their swing that are most likely from old style abrasive silver cleaners. There is an area for presentation above the tree branch that is well rounded and has never been engraved. The lid slides on and off with good drag and stays in place when the jar is lightly shaken.
The glass jar is in excellent plus condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, abrasions, scratches or repairs. Both the top and the bottom appear to have their original hand polished/beveled rims. I only found a couple of those flea bites located at the top rim of some panels that could be from cutting or usage. The glass is very clear and bright with no haze, fogging or cloudiness.
The rim of the sterling lid has the marks as seen in photo # 2. The jar stands 4 1/8" tall X 2 3/8" at widest point X 1 7/8" at deepest point. A very rare oval shape we have never seen before in a very desirable F & B pattern. It's a great storage jar for Q-tips if you need a practical reason to buy it. At this time we are pleased to also be able to offer in the same pattern - a mirror Item # 436, a powder jar Item # 119 and a tooth powder jar Item # 434 .
