This Foster & Bailey dresser jar is a lovely and popular pattern of the period. The top of the sterling lid has a classic Art Nouveau wide outer border of poofy flowers and swirling leaves done with different heights. The bottom portion of the center area contains a portrait with flowing hair enjoying her singing birds. The center's top portion has a bulge for presentation but has never been engraved. The cut glass jar is comprised of a repeating pattern. It's top portion contains five fan shaped patterns made up of five con-caved cut leaves. The bottom portion is comprised of a multitude of squares with slanted sides and an X pattern in their flat tops.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, cracks, holes, deep scratches, abrasions or repairs with the rim being very well rounded. I have held the lid to the light and find no holes. The lid fits fairly well and stays on when jar shaken lightly. There is some loss of fine definition lines in the higher spots of the pattern from the old abrasive cleaners that were used. But all of the design components are very noticeable with the woman having beautiful facial features!
The glass jar is in excellent condition with no large chips, cracks, large scratches, abrasions or repairs. I found a thin 3/16" long scratch on the upper portion of the jar that may be a cutting tool oops that is hidden by the lid. There is a 1/16" surface chip and a tiny spot of rough edge on two facet rims of leaves in two different fans. If you look hard enough you can find a few of those minute flea bites from use as is normal. The glass is clear and bright with no residue, fogging or cloudiness. The top of the jar appears to have it's original hand beveled rim. The base has some of those faint, tiny, all over surface scratches consistent with use on a vanity.
The marks are on the interior curve between the side rims of the lid as seen in photo # 2 . The jar measures 3" tall by approx. 3 5/8" at the widest point of the glass. A super jar in a lovely pattern and great condition.
