This beautiful Foster & Bailey dresser jar was one of their top-of-the-line versions. The top of the sterling lid is a beautiful medium ceylon blue translucent enamel over an engine turned ray pattern with a center hand-painted scene of what we believe to be the Washington Monument viewed through a foreground pink floral motif as the focal point. Chris believes the flowers are roses, Rich says they are the famous cherry blossoms. The outer rim of the curved square sterling lid has a black enamel border with four internal sterling triangles and small clusters of sterling roses on the four side rims. The cut glass jar is stunning and is one of F & B's deluxe glass patterns. The sides are comprised of two different patterns each alternately repeated a total of four times. The narrow pattern contains two sets of vertical cut indentations each with a raised center of horizontal ridge patterns. Between them is a pattern of what I would call softly con-caved curved steps. The other pattern on the jar has a form of a flat-panel that has a wheel cut flower and fern motif. The jar's top shoulder is wider than the bottom base giving the sides a graceful downward slope.
The enamel is in excellent plus condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, crazing, deep scratches, abrasions or repairs. Tilting for best angle and light you can find a few of those normal and expected minute flea bites or touch of uneven surface where the enamel meets it's sterling rim. The artistry is extremely well done with multiple shades and vivid coloration.
The sterling is also excellent plus with no rips, dents, cracks, holes, deep scratches, abrasions or repairs with the rim being very well rounded. The lid fits very firmly and removes easily with a twist movement. On a 1/16 inch side rim of the sterling is an engraved presentation done in script that reads: "Wanda M Mallery".
The glass jar is in excellent plus condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, abrasions or repairs. The glass is clear and bright with no residue, fogging or cloudiness. The top of the jar appears to have it's original hand beveled rim. The base has some of those faint, tiny, all over surface scratches consistent with use on a vanity. If you look hard enough you can find a few of those minute flea bites from use as is normal. The entire dresser jar was someones prized possession and extremely well taken care of!
The marks are on the interior curve between the side rims of the lid as seen in photo # 4 . The jar measures 2 7/8 inches tall by approx. 4 3/8" at the widest point of the glass. F & B made a large variety of patterns in various colors in dresser sets but we have seen very little of the Washington Monument pattern. A beautiful color, rare scenic motif and deluxe glass all in superb condition.
