This delightful box could have hung from a chatelaine or been ribbon tied in a purse. It has a wonderful shape and all of the edges of the box are done with soft rounded curves instead of 90 degree angles. The lid motif is a classic example of a very expressive Art Nouveau face with floral and swirling accents.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no rips, holes, nasty dents or scratches. The lid hinge is all original without repairs and is in smooth working order. The lid closes with a soft thud and stays closed. The ring on the top shows some lead solder on the backside joint to the box where the joint was evidently beefed up. The backside also contains presentation of "EGW" in a lovely flowing script
The surface of the box was done in a satin finish with vermeil (a form of gold plate). The exterior vermeil is in an even toned coloration with just 4 tiny crescent shape spots of silver showing thru on the backside bottom corners. The interior vermeil is also even toned but is brighter due to less wear, less cleaning and being applied to a standard polished sterling surface. You can find normal black spots of patina on the surface of the vermeil especially around the outer edge of the face.
The backside has the marks as seen in photo # 5. The 3 is a model/part number. The box measures approx. 2" wide and tall, discounting the ring, and is approx. 7/8" deep at highest point of the face.
