This Kerr dresser jar is a lovely Art Nouveau floral design with it's raised patterns of poofy flowers with swirling leaves and curlicues. Just a beautiful and elegant floral design as expected from Kerr without being overdone or fussy. The glass is also lovely with two alternating patterns each repeated 5 times around the jar. The smaller pattern is in the shape of a raised leaf with a con-caved center panel. Matching both sides of the curve on this leaf are thin fern shaped con-vex leaves with a tiny zipper pattern on their top rims. The larger pattern is in a somewhat fan shape and consists of 3 different patterns. At it's base is a raised diamond with an 8 pointed star cut in it's surface. Above are 2 somewhat raised triangle shapes with a cut surface of delicate cross hatched lines creating tiny diamonds. At the center top of the diamond star, between the triangles is a con-caved cut fan of 5 leaves. This is definitely one of the more quality jars found on dresser silver as the patterns are varied, detailed and have wonderful deep con-caved cuts.
The sterling is in excellent condition with no rips, large dents, cracks, deep scratches or abrasions. The outer rim is extremely well rounded with just a few minute surface scratches and a barely visible slight flat spot that most people would miss seeing. The lid fits very firmly and will not fall off when jar is shaken. When tilting for best angle and light I found a pin point sized hole in the lid (see photo #8). It is so minute that again a lot of people would not find it. The lid has no presentation engraved and never has had any.
The glass is also in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, nasty scratches or abrasions. The hand beveled top rim appears to be the original. Upon close inspection on the exterior of the jar next to the rim is what appears to be a light surface touch up that I am assuming removed a flake. Rubbing my fingers over pattern rims I can find bites and rough spots as can be normal. At the top of one of the leaves in the smaller pattern I found some nicks on the zippers and flakes to their side rims (largest 5/32 long X 3/32 wide). On the same pattern at the top rim facet of the con-caved panel is a 1/16" nick.
The hallmarks are on the side rim as seen in photo # 9's insert, the 1700 is the design number. The jar measures 3 1/2" tall x approx. 4 1/4 in dia. at widest point of glass. A beautiful Art Nouveau floral dresser jar in excellent condition from one of the top silversmiths of the period. We are pleased to be able to offer the matching mirror, Item # 449, at this time.
