This circa 1900 French cravat pin is just outstanding. The monkeys are each holding a fresh water pearl ball with the rear monkey also having hold of his playmates tail! The detailing on the monkeys is absolutely wonderful. You can easily see their facial expressions & features of eyes, ears, nose, mouths & fingers as well as the texture of their fur. The base of the pin has 26 channel mounted square cut rubies. The rubies are natural and are of excellent color. The small pearls are odd shaped and are most likely natural .In this size it does not matter, value wise, if the pearls are natural or cultured. (Ruby Lane requires a disclaimer and proof on all natural pearls) The pin has it's original pin sticks & C clasp. The extra short pin is there due to it being a cravat pin. There are touch marks on the C clasp of 750 which is European for 18kt gold & a makers hallmark. We find no repairs to the pin. I over exposed photo #8 so you can see a line thru the right side of the pin base. This is NOT a crack, it is a joint or die/mold line. The other side of the pin in the exact same position has the same line but in very very faint, on again/off again visibility. The base of the pin thru the rubies is 1 9/16" long. It is 1 5/8" long thru the monkeys & is 9/16" at tallest point. This is a super piece with a lot of personality suitable for either sex. Imagine it on a tie or suit jacket lapel on a man or the edge of a blouse/rolled sweater collar or on a blazer for a woman.
