Webster Co. Sterling and MOP Figural Teddy Bear Baby Rattle - Circa 1910
This wonderful baby rattle is in outstanding condition as it was definitely never given to the baby/toddler to play with. The teddy bear is very well done with original to manufacture indentations of different depths. These indentations give the teddy dimension and fur texture as well as an illusion of muscles and movement. No matter how carefully we examine the bear's nose we can't decide if it is dented or original. The bells are definitely the originals with a nice sound and their interior beads have free movement. All of the sterling is free of large dents, holes, scratches, abrasions or repair and is firmly attached to the mother of pearl handle. On the teddy it is impossible to tell if any of the indentations are not original. But I found two small spots of light indentations on the bottom half of the pillow the teddy is sitting on. The one on the front of the rattle looks to be original to manufacture as it flows with the pillows shape and curlicue edge rim. The one on the back appears to be from use and is an approximate 1/16" dimple. The front of the collar has been engraved with presentation of "A.M.R.". The mother of pearl handle is in excellent condition with no nicks, chips, scratches, abrasions or repairs. It shows extremely light evidence of usage due to occasional faint surface only scratches seen with a 10 power loupe. The marks are located on the backside of the collar and both bells as seen in the photo. The teddy and his pillow measure 1 11/16" tall by 2 3/8" wide thru the bells by 1/2" at his deepest point. Including the handle the rattle stands approximately 3 3/4" tall. Every rattle collection should have a teddy bear and with it's super condition and great price this one is it.
