Our silver pill box was someone's wonderful reminder of their trip to Spain. The Puerta de Alcala or Alcala Gate is located in the middle of the busy Plaza de la Independencia and is one of Madrid's best known landmarks. Construction of the gate took 9 years and was finally completed in 1778. It is now classified as a national monument and a must see tourist attraction.
The silver pill box is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, deep scratches or repairs. The bottom half of the pill box has a very light flatness to a spot on it's outer rim (see > on photo). The box closes with the friction method and is quite firm in it's closure - it does not open when shaken. The depiction of the gate on the top of the pill box is very well defined with nice, crisp lines and depth to it's entry doors. The inside base of the bottom half of the box has some scuffing as seen in the photo.
The marks are on the bottom of the pill box as seen in the photos. They are the Spanish pentagram mark for a minimum silver content of 915/1000 originated in 1934. The other mark in a hexagonal cartouche is the makers mark. The pill box measures 1 11/16" in diameter and is 1/2" deep.
