14Kt. Multi-Colored Gold Etruscan Revival Pin Pendent Combo - Circa 1880
Etruscan Revival is one of my favorite periods of antique jewelry so I am always admiring it. This pin/pendent is just fabulous and a bit unusual in design. The designer had great imagination and style. The high polished background portions on the front of the piece are a very light toned rose gold. The mil-grained curlicues on the top of the piece and the solid curlicue piece at the bottom are yellow gold. Both leaf patterns and the vertical strip behind the top flower are a light green gold. The top flower is silver and the bottom flower is pink gold. All of the colors are subtle in tone and tastefully combined so there is no glaring, harsh or brassy look to the piece. But even better then the colors is the movement on the piece that will show when worn as either a pin or pendent. Looking at photo # 4 you can see the pendulum (for want of a better word) is comprised of two parts. The top part with the flower decor swings sideways. The back part of the pendulum that is shaped somewhat like a key can swing forward/backwards. Just super all over design!
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, deep scratches or repairs. On the backside of the top pendulum part there is evidence of gold testing by a less experienced person. You can see a small rubbing area that resulted in a surface indent line into the gold. My photo # 7 shows the top as well as the backside of the pendulum part so you can see it did not go all the way thru the piece. You can also see on several photos that there is a bit of scuffing to the back part of the pendulum from the front piece rubbing against it. It is very minor and due to the pieces form of construction but I am reporting it to be accurate. The stationary bale, the pin hinge, pin stick all appear to be the originals and are in smooth working order. The pin stick has a light curve and a good point. The locking clasp appears to be a professionally done replacement(circa 1920) and is in smooth working order.
The pin/pendent has no gold content marks except for the locking clasp. Rich has acid tested numerous spots and will guarantee a minimum of 14t. gold. The piece measures approx. 2 5/8" tall by 1 1/2" at widest point and weighs approx. 11 grams. A stunning piece from a great jewelry period that has style and imagination for that woman who loves Victorian jewelry.has style and imagination for that woman who loves Victorian jewelry.
