This handcarved pin is just adorable and in such outstanding condition. He has a beautiful little face with well defined facial features and a well rounded body with plainly seen fingers and toes. It's quite possible he's supposed to be Cupid as he has a well detailed wing and what appears to be an arrow quiver under his tummy. He's stretched out resting among curlicues that I believe represent clouds. Hanging below our resting cherub are three handcarved coral amphorae (vases).
The backside of the pin has a very simplistic frame holding the pin stick, C clasp and mounts for the vases. The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, cracks or repairs. The pin stick, it's hinge and the C clasp all appear to be the originals and in smooth working order. The pin stick has a slight graceful curve from use and a good point. The frame has no gold content marks but Rich acid tested and will guarantee a minimum of 14kt.
The coral is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. With intense inspection you can find an occasional natural pit or fissure. With inspection by a 10 power loupe I found that the tip of his big toe on his right foot is missing. When you tilt the pin upwards you can plainly see with your eyes an additional piece of curlicue carved coral placed under his left leg. Both it and the base of the pin have smooth, rounded edge rims (photos 8 & 9), it is NOT a broken off piece! We can only assume more height was need on the coral to hide and secure the gold pin frame. All coral pieces appear to be original to the pin as their coloration is an excellent match.
The pin comes with what appears to be it's original presentation box. Both the lid and base fabrics are intact with no rips or holes. The exterior of the box is covered in a faux leather like paper that has excellent minus coverage on the top of the box. The bottom of the box and hinge area are missing some areas of paper. The metal hinge appears to be original and is in smooth working order. The box has a push button closure. It closes with a click and stays closed when lightly shaken.
The cherub measures 2" long by a hair under 3/4" tall thru his quiver/wing. The pin is a total of approx. 2 3/4" tall when you measure thru the center vase. A wonderful quality carved coral pin from the Victorian era for a collection or to wear.
