This romantic Foster & Bailey pattern of lovers on a swing is affectionately called Paul & Virginia by dealers. It has two lovers sharing a swing on a lovely summer afternoon amid the blooming foliage of a garden. The glass jar is beautifully cut with two alternating patterns each repeated four times. I would have to call the main pattern a very unusual modified shaped star. It has six points of different lengths and widths with three on its top and three on its bottom. The center top point has an interior cross hatch pattern. The bottom three points have interior diamond shaped patterns. The two outer bottom points extend under the alternating pattern of a large oval coin spot giving it a fan like base.
The sterling is in excellent plus condition with no rips, cracks, holes, dents, scratches, abrasions or repairs. The lid has been held to the light and no holes were found. The rim is well rounded with just the occasional pin point sized surface indentation or hint of un-even surface as found on antique silver. The pattern is crisp & well defined. Note her superb facial features, their curved arms & legs, even well defined fingers & toes. There are just those few spots of loss of fine lines in some of the high points like hair, her dress across her knees, leaves & flower petals above their swing that are most likely from old style abrasive silver cleaners. There is an area for presentation above the tree branch that is well rounded and has never been engraved. The lid slides on and off with good drag and stays in place when the jar is lightly shaken.
The glass jar is in excellent plus condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, abrasions, scratches or repairs. Both the top and the bottom appear to have their original hand polished/beveled rims. I only found a couple of those 1/32 inch and smaller flea bites on the jar. The glass is very clear and bright with no haze, fogging or cloudiness. The base of the jar has a deeply cut standard star and just a touch of surface scratching from rubbing on a dresser.
The rim of the sterling lid has the marks as seen in photo # 3. The jar stands just a hair under 3 inches tall and has an approximate 3 5/8 inch diameter through the widest point. A very desirable F & B patterned Art Nouveau jar in superb condition. At this time we are pleased to also be able to offer in the same pattern a sterling mirror Item # 436, an oval jar Item # 451 and a tooth powder jar Item # 434.
