This 20's bronze and porcelain enamel casket had a lot of work put into it's design and manufacture. We have a lovely hand painted porcelain enamel plaque secured onto the lid with a running pattern of tiny flowers. The casket is cast in bronze with three different patterns, two of the three being repeated. The lid's side rim is also the casket's bottom border. It is two leaves with stem shaped as a curlicue encircling a flower repeated around all four sides. The pattern at the top of the casket's bottom half is found again just above the bottom border and is a running repetition of a classic fern like stem. The wide pattern thru the middle is comprised of scrolling curlicue leaves at both ends. In between them is a shape comprised of four equal sized connected half circles creating a four petal flower. Each circle has the identical interior of three leaves pointing into the center of the flower. All three patterns also have different background patterns- a minute raised dot. a vertical line and a zigzag. The bronze casket has been completed with a dore surface (type of gold plating). The interior of the casket has been covered with a form of nap fabric-possibly a velveteen. It is a dark Hershey bar brown in color with a wonderful stylized flower and leaf pattern.
The bronze is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, cracks, scratches, abrasions or repairs. The hinge is all original in working order. The base contains four ball feet that are all original and firmly attached. The casket closes with a friction method and stays closed when lightly shaken. The entire lid and bottom casket box were each cast in one piece, the four sides were not soldered together. Photo # 7 is of the right side. At the bottom of the casket you can see two black > pointing at the bottom corner area. To the left is an insert that shows 2 narrow holes in the corner-the bottom is 3/32" long and the top is 1/16" long. The other corner on the same side panel at the same bottom area has an approx. 1/32" diameter hole. These holes are usually caused during manufacture due to the mold having residue in those areas so the corners do not form properly. The dore gold plating is in very good condition. It has different tones thru out the patterns. Partially due to age and partially due to the way the pattern accepted the plate. The plating shows definite age spotting thru out the casket evident in the photos.
The porcelain enamel plaque is in excellent plus condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, crazing, scratches, abrasions or repairs. The artistry is all intact with lovely vibrant colors. The fabric interior is also excellent plus with no rips, holes, missing nap due to damage or wear. The pattern is created by a planned much lower, short nap. The casket comes with a key that may be the original and the music box does work. It has a very full sound and plays a nice waltz (no idea which one).
The only marks are a "MADE IN AUSTRIA" on the bottom of the box-bottom half of photo # 3 top black ^. The lower black ^ is where the key attaches to wind the box. The casket measures 5 1/8" long x 4 1/8" wide x 3 1/8" tall.
