This Battin mistress safe is also called a locket safe by some. You lift the lid and see a tiny ball at the top of the front-pull the ball forward and the front panel opens. When you close the panel make sure it clicks into place so the lid will fit correctly. Inside is a raised oval compartment with a photo rim just like a locket. The match safe is in excellent condition with no damage or repairs found. The photo rim is in round and fits firmly. There is a photo cover that is all intact. Both hinges are all original and the striker is crisp. I held the safe up to light and no cracks or holes were visible. Lid is in alignment & spring is quick and firm. On the interior are the marks. Left side reads: Pat. March 31 1896. Right side reads: Sterling-B (Battin's hallmark) & 179 (design/model number). The front has been hand engraved with such swirling, artistic initials that I am unable to decipher them. The backside is also engraved & reads Silver Jubilee with a bit of artistic scroll. The match safe measures 2 1/2" tall x 1 3/8" wide x 7/16" deep.
