This shell shaped match safe is in outstanding condition with very good to excellent accent lines thru the shell and superb, well raised, even height to the HMMBA on the front. The backside shows some wear to the "Compliments Gorham Mfg. Co. New York" (see photo). The lid is in line with the body, hinge is original w/no repair and lid springs closed w/ a loud, good snap. The striker is well ridged. I have held the safe up to light and see no crack or holes when viewing the interior and the exterior has no dents. One interior rim has the Lion/Anchor/G hallmark for Gorham and Sterling. On the other side's rim you will find the date mark symbol of the Duck/Rooster for 1890.
The HMMBA (Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit Association) originated in 1879 and I have found proof of annual meetings/conventions in numerous years in different cities/states. Our Gorham match safe has the date mark for 1890 which is the year the HMMBA was in Boston, MA (May of 1890). The assoc. was founded to offer hotel workers insurance at a dollar a month. It appears it became Bankers Life & Casualty Co. in 1935 which is still in business today. In 2004 Bankers celebrated it's 125th anniversary crediting HMMBA as being it's predecessor.
