In the 19th and early 20th centuries, sash buckles were worn by women like jewelry. This large rococo screen-back 2-piece buckle is signed PF, for Piel Freres, the French maker. It has a silvery gold finish--quite bright--and is in very fine condition. The central medallion of porcelain is also seen as an early 19th c. soft porcelain button. The transfer design is hand-painted and fired (mixtion). The tiny turquoise cabochons are glass. It measures 3 & 3/4" by 2 & 3/4", and as usual with Piel Freres, it is fine quality for the masses in excellent condition.
