This is a very hard-to-find large 1 & 5/8" heavy steel and brass button from the late 19th century. The teeny cut steels look gold. The exquisite subject is an intricately featured French Fop, leaning stylishly on a chair, where his hat rests, etched in steel and mirror polished. The etched out background looks black; the subjects reflects. The shiny steel subject is further enhanced with engraving. I bought this large gorgeous button as a brooch. I recognized it from the Big Book of Buttons, and had it restored by my jeweler. It is a fabulous, handsome Incroyable! The saw teeth holding the steel disc or medallion sparkle silver against the bright gold finish of the cut steels. Bling!
