This is a very late 19th or possibly early 20th c. Japanese fine cloisonne enamel button. It is in excellent condition and measures over 1 & 1/4" (National Button Society large). The bamboo closions (compartments for enamel) are gold wire as fine as baby hair. The background is pressed foil (gin bari) over which the transparent enamel is fired. This enamel is so beautiful, I would love to have a plaque like this to wear as a ring--but it is fragile and will survive the next century best in a fine collection! The lobed shape and incredible "hombre" pink make this silver-rimmed brass-backed button a visual feast.
